The Victorian branch furnishes the room generously and equips its occupants with an equally substantial reluctance to acknowledge the obvious.
Inside the taxonomy, the specimen represents formal non-acknowledgment under soft-furnished conditions: the Institute’s theory that upholstery may reduce acoustic reflection while etiquette increases the perceived administrative burden of admitting that a sound occurred.

The archive imagines a generic formal interior with rugs, curtains, upholstered seating, side tables, and enough conversational structure for everyone present to become fascinated by the weather at exactly the same moment.

The Respectable Attenuation Principle
The Institute proposes that each additional layer of fabric decreases echo but increases the number of conversational maneuvers required to preserve decorum. No experiment supports this, which has never slowed the Institute down before.

V. Lineage Significance

VQ.401 opens the Modern branch with the Respectable Attenuation Principle: the Institute’s belief that an unexplained sound can become socially smaller while becoming psychologically much, much larger.
The transition from Enlightenment Queef is organizational rather than historical. EQ.303 names, measures, and classifies the unsupported event; VQ.401 inherits the paperwork, hides it beneath a tasteful antimacassar, and changes the subject. The next specimen, Roaring ’20s Queef, will respond to this restraint with brass instruments, dance-floor noise, and substantially less interest in whispering.

A nonexistent household supposedly inspected an upholstered seat for twelve minutes after a suspicious noise. No person was questioned. The settee declined to comment and was later moved six inches to the left.

A cataloger proposed that a decorative furniture covering could absorb both sound and social responsibility. The acoustic half of the claim was never tested; the social half was immediately accepted by the committee.
